Deputy Prime Minister Tonio Borg’s objection to the amendment to the original motion of censure on Minister Carm Mifsud Bonnici raises serious questions on this government’s credentials on parliamentary democracy.

Dr Borg’s argument sustaining his objection was that, while the original motion calls for censure of the minister, the amendment calls for the resignation of the minister, thus changing the original motion. Both Anġlu Farrugia and Josè Herrera have explained that the amendment clarifies, if any clarification were needed, what should happen if the motion were to be approved by Parliament, namely, the resignation of Dr Mifsud Bonnici as minister.

It is well known that whenever the opposition has tabled a motion of no confidence in the government, the government then amends the original motion by turning it into a motion of confidence. In this way, completely changing the original motion from one of no confidence to one of confidence in the government. A bigger change than that cannot be imagined!

It is becoming more evident with each passing day that GonziPN is treating Parliament as if it were the government’s own property.
