My dear friend and colleague, Andrew Borg Cardona, writing in a style which may convince readers that he is the Oracle of Truth, comments immediately in The Times online as soon as the Labour Party and its leader speak about the current democratic credentials of the Maltese Parliament (May 7, Yes, Someone Can Be and May 24, To Bury, First Kill).

It seems that my colleague is unaware of my opinion published in The Times on May 15 entitled Erosion Of Our Democracy, which, to be fair, was published in between Dr Borg Cardona’s blogs. Just a short reminder: My opinion highlighted the fact that the Nationalist Party in government has not taken heed of the Council of Europe’s invitation to update the Parliamentary Standing Orders in accordance with Resolution 1601 (2008) of its Parliamentary Assembly and that, during the last six months, now inclusive of the PN’s opposition to the PL’s amendment of its censure motion of the Minister for Home Affairs, Malta has suffered a dysfunctional democracy.

May I remind the blogger that it is not only the PL that is saying these things but also a member of Parliament of the same government, Franco Debono, who, apart from the criticism he has levelled at his own government in the past, went on record as saying in Parliament that “This Parliament has been shamefully run by … (Tonio Borg) and by … (the Prime Minister). It’s shameful that democracy has been tainted in this manner...” (May 24).

I believe that it would be better if my colleague looked at the future in order that we better democracy in Malta in accordance with the Council of Europe’s recommendations rather than delving into what happened more than a quarter of a century ago in his usual flair of attacking all that is red.
