On September 21, 1964, Malta was to get rid of its colonial yoke and achieve independence. Among the burdens it was supposed to have shed is the iron hand of the Raj. The colonial rules and regulations were to be relegated to the history books.
The Legislative Assembly was to be reborn as Malta’s Parliament with absolute rules and procedures attended to it.
On May 6, the 8pm News on TVM showed Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi, at a public gathering in Rabat, gesticulating and vigorously chastising the Opposition, hurling insults at them for, according to him, they are only obsessed with using parliamentary time by tabling one motion of censure after another.
Apparently, the Prime Minister seems to have become oblivious to the parliamentary process and procedures in more senses than one, in a truly vibrant democratic environment.
