About 89 per cent visited EU destinations, a rise of 10 per cent, with Italy and the UK ranking as the most popular.
The number of trips to non-EU destinations dropped by 24 per cent. Maltese tourists spent €296 million abroad last year.
Total package expenditure stood at €44.8 million (€92.8 per night) and that for non-package trips stood at €91.5 million (€50.2 a night).
In December alone, tourist trips stood at 31,044, at par with 2010.
