The article by Kristina Chetcuti on educational expert Roger Murphy’s views on the Maltese educational system (The Sunday Times, June 19) confirmed my belief that the number of contact hours in our schools is low. Most of the European Countries countries have hot summers and cold winters, so I see no reason why our schools should close for three months in summer and for several breaks in winter.

With the new or refurbished schools and modern facilities we should have better results without the need to resort to private lessons on such a large scale.

Maybe someone will give us a clear and impartial comparison between our school contact hours and those of our counterparts in the EU.
