Just five days before celebrating World Diabetes Day and two days after the Health Ministry launched a diabetes awareness campaign, the teachers at St Thomas More Ħamrun Boys’ Junior Lyceum had a very clever idea: take Form 4 students to the National Library and then to the Golden Arches.

They too wanted to contribute something to the well-being of our society. They wanted to make sure we maintain our unbeaten record at childhood obesity.

Are these teachers so incapable of controlling their students that they have to promise to take them to the Golden Arches if they behave? Because that was what one of the teachers told them.

I am writing this letter as I find it shameful that an educational institution such as St Thomas More Ħamrun Boys’ Junior Lyceum is so uncaring towards the health of its students, especially in the light of the latest childhood obesity figures. I hope that senior officials at the Ministry of Education are reading

this letter and that they take the necessary action so that this experience is not repeated. For the sake of our children’s health, please take note.
