Gozitan students will be able to get a taste of what farming is like through a project being carried out by the Gozo Ministry in collaboration with the University of Malta.

The Hands-on-Farming project will see primary school students planting crops and learning about animal care.

This forms part of a €1.2 million investment that seeks to turn the government farm, in the limits of Xewkija, into an innovation centre for rural science and the environment.

The aim is to promote agricultural and farming practices that respect the environment and discover new techniques to help farmers. Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono visited works on the centre that started a few months ago.

The works include maintenance and renovation of existing structures, such as office space and pens where animals are kept, and an aviary and beehive area.
