What a pity to read about the bickering that goes on between the two main parties and local council members when, actually, their sole aim should be to ensure the common good for the district they represent.

Several years ago I had written a letter to The Times that emphasised the importance of council members not representing any political party.

They should only be elected as individuals wishing to help and dedicate their time to the district. It appears I was right!

What was the intention of the government when it decided that members of the council should represent a political party?

What was there to be gained from it? All districts deserve the undying attention of the entire council irrespective of any political colour. Unfortunately, this does not exist and a perfect example is the outgoing Sliema council, which had to be dissolved. So much for their political beliefs!
