Mqabba 0
Senglea Athletic 0

This clash between two teams vying for promotion finished goalless. Senglea may consider themselves lucky to have taken away a point as Mqabba were the better side on the day and had most of the goal-scoring opportunities.

After Lija’s upset to Żebbuġ on Friday, Mqabba are now the runners-up in the table, three points behind Naxxar who have a game in hand.

Mqabba created the first scoring opportunity when left-back Quincy Bregman hit a curler from a short corner with the ball finishing just wide.

Most of the action was in the middle of the park with the next attempt at goal coming on 26 minutes, Luca Casha seeing his effort finishing just over the Senglea goal.

Mqabba threatened when Goran Adamovic found space inside the box but his effort was deflected for a corner in the last minute. On 38 minutes Senglea keeper Jeffrey Farrugia saved his side when he blocked a Casha shot following a measured Mello da Silva pass.

The second half saw Mqabba hold the upperhand and they twice went close in quick succession.

Chimezie’s drive was saved by Farrugia and then Adamovic released Chimezie who hit his lob badly from a good position.

On 55 minutes, Bregman almost profited from some hesitant Senglea defending but Farrugia regained position to deny Mqabba.

Senglea were playing a very prudent game and almost conceded a goal 20 minutes from time but Cesco Guzman was on the right spot to keep out Adamovic’s goalbound header.

Senglea had influential midfielder Juninho Cabral stretchered off two minutes from time.
