Eight migrants from Somalia and Eritrea left Malta to start a new life in Norway this week after being granted international protection.

They will be helped to integrate into society by the Norwegian authorities after receiving cultural orientation classes in Malta.

The four adults and family of four were part of a group of 30 migrants already identified for relocation following a selection mission in Malta. The other 22 people will leave in the coming weeks.

Their departure forms part of the EU’s reallocation project for Malta (Eurema), which was extended last April.

Although not a member of the EU, Norway takes part in Eurema following a commitment made by ministers at a conference held by the European Commission last May.

Bulgaria, Denmark, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Lithuania, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Switzerland and the Netherlands are also involved in the project. Relocations to Germany and Ireland have already taken place.

The relocation was assisted by the UNHCR, the International Organisation for Migration and the Ministry for Home and Parliamentary Affairs.
