A 17-year-old Somali migrant yesterday admitted using a fake passport and other falsified documents to fly from Malta to Denmark, where he was seeking a better life.

Luck was not on his side because, as soon as he arrived, immigration officers saw him tearing up and disposing of his documents, leading to his arrest and interrogation. He was deported and sent back to Malta.

The migrant, who cannot be named as he is a minor, admitted to absconding from Malta with a counterfeit passport and other false documents last year.

Magistrate Francesco Depasquale jailed him for six months, suspended for two years, and warned the teenager about his future conduct during the operative term of his sentence.

Inspector Darren Buhagiar prosecuted, while lawyer Yana Micallef Stafrace was legal aid for the accused.
