The GRTU yesterday urged the planning authority to crack down on illegal waste sorting depots after an enforcement order was issued against an operator in Żabbar.

While applauding Mepa’s decision, the GRTU said the authority was aware of the existence of other waste sorting depots that also need to be presented with an enforcement notice.

“How can a 40-foot vehicle transport baled cardboard from Gozo to Malta at night when there are no authorised facilities of the sort in Gozo?” the GRTU said.

The GRTU said it was instrumental in formulating a strategy to recover recyclable waste through the setting up of Green MT, a fully owned subsidiary, which has over the last five years enticed the business community to comply with their environmental obligations.

In the past three years of Green MT’s operation, 38,000 tons of separated waste was collected from Malta and Gozo, instead of ending up in landfills.
