Mater Dei Hospital was without electricity for four minutes yesterday morning due to an unexplained delay in the generator system, which is being investigated.

Power went out at 9.40am but it took four minutes for generators to kick in due to “reasons yet to be established”, the hospital said.

“During these four minutes, the professionals at the hospital acted according to training they had received earlier this year, taking decisions in the best interests of patients,” it said.

The hospital added that most of the equipment is kitted out with an emergency reserve of energy just in case of such power outages.

The Health Department is investigating the case.
