Mater Dei Hospital CEO Joseph Caruana resigned yesterday for health reasons, six months after he had reversed his decision to leave the post.

In April, Mr Caruana had said he would remain in office after being asked to stay on by Health Minister Konrad Mizzi for another six months. In January, he had asked then health minister Godfrey Farrugia not to be considered for the post when his term ended in May.

Mr Caruana is succeeded by deputy CEO Ivan Falzon.

Mr Caruana, an engineer, was appointed in 2011 and last year vented his frustration at political intrusion at the hospital, which, over the years, weakened the management and rendered it ineffective.
