The popularity of football for veterans has risen steadily locally since long-serving sports reporter Mario Meli founded Masters Football (Malta) a few years ago.

With the start of the 2015/16 season drawing closer, Meli, the president of the new association which is now affiliated with the Malta FA and is also represented on the MFA Council, told a news conference at L’Aroma Restau-rant that a number of teams have expressed an interest in taking part in the upcoming Masters competitions.

Meli explained that, due to the expenses involved, the asso-ciation decided that, for the time being, the championship will be limited to eight teams.

Besides the two main com-petitions, namely the league and knock-out, Masters Football will be organising other events in the coming months, including a pre-season tournament, sponsored by Tools Planet, and other events during the Christmas and Easter periods.

Jival, the squad made up of players residing at the Corradino Correctional Facility, will again be taking part in this season’s competitions.

Meli thanked the other teams for accepting to play at Corra-dino, adding that the CCF inmates’ participation in sport will aid their efforts to reintegrate into society.

The fixtures of the new MSV Life Masters League were drawn during the news conference.

Norman Mifsud, from MSV Life, and Mario Pisani, the proprietor of L’Aroma Restau-rant, the sponsors of the Knock-Out competition, presented cheques to the officials of the Masters Football (Malta).
