A Somali man was sentenced to 16 months in jail suspended for 18 months for stealing a packed lunch from a car on Monday.

Abdiqani Mahad Mohamed, 20, admitted breaking into a parked Skoda, belonging to Anthony Mifsud, in Marsa and stealing his food at 8.15pm.

The police are investigating another man who was with the accused at the time.

In a separate arraignment, also before Magistrate Doreen Clarke, Libyan Abdul Hamid Saeid was jailed for seven months after he admitted stealing €125 from a Birżebbuġa bakery early yesterday morning.

Mr Saeid, 34, stood in the dock with a bruised left eye and admitted stealing the cash from Charles Micallef and assaulting him.

Mr Saeid was caught red-handed by the owner as he tried to leave the bakery with the cash.

He admitted stealing and relapsing.

Last April, Mr Saeid was given a two-month jail term, suspended for eight months, after he admitted slightly injuring compatriot Ahmed Bashir during a fight at the Ħal Far open centre.

Police Inspectors Johann Fenech and Robert Vellaprosecuted.

Lawyer Noel Bartolo was legal aid lawyer for both men.
