A German man is expected to face court action for allegedly driving away after a collision with a car in which two Nationalist MPs were riding on Wednesday evening.

He was arrested yesterday morning, as parliamentarians Ċensu Galea and Frederick Azzopardi spent the day resting, on doctors’ orders, after they suffered from whiplash.

A grey Volvo crashed into their car in Pietà, pushing the vehicle about 10 metres forward.

“Now that the initial shock is over, I’m all right. All I have is a bit of back pain,” said Mr Galea.

Mr Azzopardi felt the same way: “Had we not been wearing seatbelts we probably would have been thrown out of the windscreen.”

Mr Galea said the collision took place soon after they left Parliament, at about 7.30pm. Mr Galea was passenger in Mr Azzopardi’s car, a Toyota.

The vehicle was almost at a standstill, having stopped behind a bus, when another vehicle hit it from behind.

“There was a loud bang and we were pushed forward,” Mr Azzopardi said as Mr Galea added: “We were shaken.” After a while, a man, who sounded foreign, approached the passenger’s window and spoke to Mr Galea, who could not remember what was said.

The man then walked back to his car, which had foreign number plates. He reversed and then got out again. But after a while the man went back to his car and drove away.

Though shocked, Mr Galea had the presence of mind to take a photo of the man and his car with his mobile phone.

“I don’t know how it crossed my mind but I did,” he said, adding that he passed the photograph on to the police.

Both MPs were taken to hospital for treatment and were told to rest for two days, Mr Galea said.

The German suspected of having been the foreigner involved in the accident was arrested yesterday morning.
