A young man who needed “help not punishment” was yesterday given a last chance to show that he really wanted to turn his life around as he admitted to breaching bail conditions.

Carl Ciantar, 23, from Tarxien, admitted to failing to sign the bail book as he had been ordered to and not meeting his probation officer.

Police Inspector Daniel Zammit told Magistrate Francesco Depasquale that Mr Ciantar needed help and not punishment, adding that he had gone through a very bad patch during which he also discovered the body of his brother who had committed suicide.

The officer suggested that sentencing should be postponed for a month until he could be given the chance to show he really wanted to reform. In response, the magistrate said: “You read my mind.”

The magistrate warned Mr Ciantar that he was being given a chance to sign the bail book and keep up with his probation officer and failure to do so would see him thrown into prison.

Lawyer Marion Camilleri appeared for Mr Ciantar.
