Malta U-17 conceded a second defeat in the UEFA mini-tournament after going down to Portugal 2-1 at the Centenary Stadium, yesterday.

Branko Nisevic’s boys, who also lost to Norway by the odd goal in three on Saturday, fell behind early on to a Goncalo Guedes goal. But the hosts drew level on 31 minutes through Antoine Attard.

However, the balance only lasted seven minutes as skipper Rui Moreira put Portugal back in front. Moreira had the chance to add a second goal to his name in the second half but saw his penalty stopped by keeper Philip Schranz.

Portugal are now sharing top spot in the standings with Norway, both with two wins. The latter yesterday downed Iceland 2-0.

Norway and Portugal will face off on Thursday at the National Stadium with the winners progressing to the Elite round of the championship.

Malta will look to beat Iceland on Thursday and avoid bottom place. This match will be played at the Centenary Stadium.

Both kick-offs will be at 1.30 p.m.
