Twelve teams took part in the Gatorade Beachvolley by Night held recently under the auspices of the Malta Volleyball Association (MVA) in Birżebbuġa.

The women’s tournament was won by Melissa Cheviron and Dominika Dwoniczak, with the pair of Gertrude Zarb and Dorianne Caruana Bonnici runners-up.

Wojtech Stellmach and Oscar Brolin were the men’s champions. Three deciders had to be played to determine the winners in this category, after three teams finished on equal points.

MVA vice-president David Bonnici said that the Gatorade Beach-volley by Night came hot on the heels of a successful National Beachvolley Cup played at the same venue.

“There’s new excitement building up in beachvolley competitions as a result of the events we organised in Birżebbuġa this summer,” Bonnici said.

“We also want to thank Farsons for their support. Their sponsorship ensured the success of what proved to be an extremely popular event for the MVA.”

MVA president Jesmond Saliba reiterated the significance of the series focusing on the popular sport of beachvolleyball.

“We are extremely satisfied that the beachvolley events which have marked this summer, including the National Beachvolley Cup and the Gatorade Beachvolley by Night, have contributed towards raising the profile of the sport on our shores,” he said.

“We also succeeded in attracting the interest of many newcomers and this augurs well for the future of beachvolley.”
