Soldiers and government workers formed a human chain at Mġiebaħ Bay yesterday to remove large amounts of seaweed from the sandy beach.

The Armed Forces of Malta had to get involved in the clean-up operation of the secluded bay because heavy vehicles cannot access the area.

The seaweed and other debris was collected by hand and transferred to an AFM barge, which transported it to Xemxija for disposal by the Cleansing Directorate.

The beach was not cleaned at the start of summer as is normally done because large amounts of seaweed still cluttered the sea. The directorate was waiting for the seaweed to wash ashore so that the cumbersome cleaning operation is done only once.
