Lufthansa recently ordered 59 ultra-modern aircraft for its wide-body fleet – 34 Boeing 777-9Xs and 25 Airbus A350-900s.

The first of these will be delivered in 2016.

With a list value of €14 billion, Lufthansa described it as the largest single private-sector investment in the history of German industry.

“Both the Boeing 777-9Xs and Airbus A350-900s have a much wider cabin than the Airbus A340, which will give us new opportunities to improve comfort for our customers when designing the cabin interior,” explained Carsten Spohr, Lufthansa executive board member.

Following the aircraft order already placed in March of this year, Lufthansa currently has a total of 295 brand-new aircraft on order with a list value of €36 billion. These should all be delivered by 2025.

Older Boeing 747-400s and Airbus A340-300s will be phased out by 2025.

Lufthansa currently operates a wide-body fleet of around 107 aircraft, among them 10 ultra-modern Airbus A380s.

The aim is to reduce the number of different models and the fleet’s complexity.
