I am convinced that were a referendum to be held as to whether political parties should contest local councils, the majority of voters would vote No.
Local council elections never give a true picture of the political pulse of the country- Godfrey Camilleri, Attard
I am sick and tired of hearing that a local council with a Labour or a Nationalist majority will deliver more than a council dominated by the other party would.
We want councillors who deliver because they love their locality and not to make one political party look better than the other or to use the council as a platform to boost the party’s fortunes.
If politicians want to use local council elections to test the mood of the country, they are wasting money and fostering pique. Local council elections never give a true picture of the political pulse of the country; well conducted surveys give more reliable results. So why continue with this political game when it is doing more harm than good?
I am sure that so many voters stayed away from the polling booths on March 10 mainly because party politics was involved.
If we had to vote for councillors without the involvement of the political parties, the turnout would have been bigger, pique would diminish and the whole council can work together for the good of the community.
