The international convention of the Association of Lions Clubs Walled Cities will be held in Malta on Saturday bringing together clubs from walled cities around the world to raise awareness on common heritage and share experiences.
The idea for this convention was introduced in 2003. Lion Franco Ghio, president pro tempore of Lions Club Lucca le Mura, invited clubs from cities surrounded by ancient walls to form an association. This was intended to promote mutual understanding among citizens of walled cities, study their histories and work together towards preserving the walls for future generations.
At present there are 57 clubs worldwide that are association members.
Lions Club Mdina vice president Mary Anne Abela said very positive feedback had been received from a substantial number of foreign participants and local clubs, with 300 delegates attending this eighth convention.
“We want this convention to provide a showcase of all Malta has to offer. We are confident this conference will be another big success,” she said.
The convention, which should be appealing to architects and professionals interested in the maintenance, restructuring and restoration of city walls and other ancient buildings, will be held at the Grand Hotel Excelsior, Floriana. The guest speaker will be Stephen Spiteri, an authority on walls and fortifications.
