A pilot project which was kicked off last year by Smart Technologies saw the first 80 studentsin three Grade 5 classes at Stella Maris College in Gzira being equipped with netbooks andeducational software.

Called the Stella Maris Pilot Project, this initiative is being undertaken as part of the School of the Future programme through which Smart Technologies is supporting a network of netbooks in a bid to play an active role in thepropagation of more application of IT resources in education.

“The first year in this three-year projecthas been successful and very rewarding for us, being actively involved in this interestinginitiative,” explained Christopher Demicoli, business development manager of SmartTechnologies.

“The main concept of this project is to explore how technology can be used in the classroom to enhance the students’ education experience and learning. We are very supportive of local education and are delighted to collaborate by offering our expertise.”

Smart Technologies also secured the support of the participating students’ parents, who understood the concept and acknowledged the importance of IT in their children’s formation.

All students have their own netbook – a specific model that meets their needs.

“However, the pilot project will not be replacing the traditional learning method but open a new world to the students’ way of studying,” Mr Demicoli said.

Different technologies are being used to help interaction between student and teacher via netbooks and educational software.

“One interesting aspect which has made this initiative very appealing especially among parents is the possibility to apply Microsoft’s effective parental controls.”

Applying parental controls in Windows helps parents, guardians and teachers manage how children access the web, games and programmes they have access to, and time allowed to use the computer.
