A lawyer has taken Lou Bondí to task over his declaration that he was an atheist after the television presenter kissed the cross when he swore to say the truth before testifying in court.

Toni Abela, who is also the deputy leader of the Labour Party, raised the issue in a libel case instituted by Mr Bondí himself against former Labour MP Wenzu Mintoff over comments he made on a television show in 2007.

During the sitting on Wednesday, Dr Abela noted that, in view of the fact that Mr Bondì had publicly declaredthat he did not believe in God, the court should give its direction about the evidence that was given under a religious oath.

Lawyer Anthony Cremona, appearing for Mr Bondí, asked that he be given time to answer.

Magistrate Joseph Apap Bologna gave Dr Cremona two weeks to make his submissions on the issue.
