A Nationalist Party candidate for the European Parliament election left for Lampedusa on a sailing boat last night to raise awareness of the plight hundreds of irregular immigrants face on the perilous journey to reach Europe.

Kevin Plumpton will be joined by the EPP Youth president Konstantinos Kyranakis from Greece and vice president Riccardo Pozzi from Italy on the 28-hour boat journey.

The group will be visiting the site of the tragic October 3 shipwreck, which left hundreds of migrants dead, and hold a memorial ceremony at sea.

The aim of the journey is to highlight the urgent action needed to prevent more victims.

MŻPN general secretary Matthew Agius and a crew from Times of Malta is accompanying the group.
