On the occasion of International Day of People with Disability, the Parliamentary Secretariat for Rights of People with Disability and Active Ageing held the third edition of the Just Society Awards.

Parliamentary Secretary Justyne Caruana said the awards were launched to cater for the need to work wholeheartedly for the rights of people with disability.

There are 29 nominations for this year’s award.

Rita Vella, widow of Kevin, who passed away some months ago, received the Award for Lifetime Achievement in Disability.

The Siġġiewi Basketball School got the Advocacy and Rights Award.

Matthew Giordmaina received the Award for Disability Action and Activism. Maria Pia Saliba got the Effort Award.

Inspector Fabian Fleri and Maria Zammit got recognition awards.

The evening was a spectacle of dance and song, with the participation of Ivan Grech, Mro Domenic Galea, Therese Caruana, Yanika Galea, Street Elements and the Hynotic Dancers.

Also taking part were athletes Mario Bonello and Naomi Axisa, as well as Special Olympics swimmer Charmaine Mifsud, who talked about their life experiences.
