A Liberian who lives in a church room has been jailed after he admitted stealing from his former partner’s home.

Joe Maxwell, 42, broke into the house in Żabbar on Tuesday.

As he stood in the dock, his former partner Georgina Borg sat on her electric disability scooter and said there was no chance that she would resume the relationship with him.

As the arraignment got under way, Magistrate Francesco Depasquale said he recognised Mr Maxwell from another case in which he gave him a suspended jail term for biting a man’s arm.

The magistrate confirmed that Mr Maxwell lived at St Barbara’s church, Valletta, where the priest in charge would let him sleep in a room.

Mr Maxwell pleaded guilty to stealing Ms Borg’s identity card and house keys, her documents pertaining to the National Commission for People with a Disability and some other small items.

Magistrate Depasquale brought into force a previously suspended six-month jail term and fined him €100.

Police Inspector Sylvana Briffa prosecuted.
