Malta waterpolo national coach Karl Izzo and his assistant Anthony Farrugia were rewarded by the Aquatic Sport Association for guiding the team to a silver medal in the Commonwealth Championships in Scotland with a new two-year contract, the governing body announced yesterday.

Last week, Izzo and Farrugia led the waterpolo national team to a commendable showing in Aber-deen, winning five of the seven matches played to finish just behind tournament winners England.

Their success in Aberdeen comes just a few weeks after the team won the EU 8 Nations Cup tournament in Limerick, Ireland.

“The ASA announces that it has extended the contract of national coaches Karl Izzo and his assistant Anthony Farrugia for another two years up to the end of 2016,” the ASA said in a statement.

“This decision, taken by the ASA Executive Committee, comes following the spate of excellent results obtained over the past 15 months which included reaching the qualifying semi-final of the European Championships, winning the EU 8 Nations Cup in Limerick and culminated with winning the silver medal at the Commonwealth Waterpolo Championships in Aberdeen.”

Izzo has been in charge of the national team since December 2012 when he replaced Croat Sergio Afric.
