Ivory Coast became the first team to qualify for the quarter-finals of the African Nations Cup yesterday and Algeria were the first team to be eliminated when they were beaten 2-0 by Togo in Group D.
The Ivorians, 3-0 winners over Tunisia yesterday, cannot finish lower than second in their group while Algeria are out after losing their first two matches.
Ivory Coast head the group with six points, followed by Togo and Tunisia on three and Algeria on zero. Ivory Coast face Algeria on Wednesday and Togo meet Tunisia.
Ivory Coast overcame Tunisia in yesterday’s opening match at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace.
Yaya Toure crowned a towering performance with an 87th-minute goal after Gervinho had given the Ivorians the half-time lead and Didier Ya Konan added the third just seconds after coming on as a substitute.
In the other match, goals from Emmanuel Adebayor after 32 minutes and Dove Wome’s stoppage time strike handed Togo their first win in the competition.
