Italian inflation this month rose to 2.7 per cent on a 12-month comparison, up from 2.6 per cent last month, a preliminary estimated from the official data agency Istat showed yesterday.

The annual rate was at its highest level since November 2008 and the result was in line with expectations from analysts polled by Dow Jones Newswires.

The monthly rate rose 0.1 per cent from May, Istat said.

The rise in inflation was due mainly to a strong increase in transport prices of 6.2 per cent compared to June 2010, Istat said.

There were also rises 0f 4.6 per cent in property prices, water, electricity and fuel, as well as three per cent for food and non-alcoholic drinks.
