Updated - A young Italian man drowned in a swimming pool at a St Julians hotel yesterday afternoon.

The police said the man, 27, was still alive when he taken to hospital at about 3.30 p.m.

He died a short while later. 

A magisterial inquiry is under way and the police are investigating the case.

Informed sources said the Italian, an experienced swimmer, was engaged in a game with his friends, testing who could stay longest underwater when he lost consciousness and was pulled out of the water.
