Inter have agreed a deal with Lazio for the loan of Argentine forward Mauro Zarate but have missed out on Genoa’s Argentinian attacking midfielder Rodrigo Palacios.

Inter had been in discussions with Genoa over the transfer of Palacios but failed to reach agreement on a price despite offering €10 million, according to Italian media reports.

Instead they have plumped for Lazio’s out-of-favour forward Zarate who will cost the nerazzurri three million euros for the season-long loan with a provision for a €15m permanent deal in a year, Italian press report.

“My first choice was to come to Inter, we fought to come here and now I must show what I’m worth,” Zarate told journalists upon leaving Inter’s offices in Milan.

“I’m very happy, I want to train hard and do well. Inter are a great team, there are many Argentines here and that’s great.”

The 24-year-old began his career at Velez Sarsfield in his homeland before moving to Qatar with Al-Sadd.

He had a loan spell with Birmingham City in England before joining Lazio in 2008.

Inter have been in need of attacking reinforcements having sold Samuel Eto’o to Russians Anzhi Makhachkala and let Goran Pandev go to Napoli on loan.

Meanwhile, new Inter signing Diego Forlan says he will have no problems playing out of position if that is what is required of him by coach Gian Piero Gasperini.

Inter signed Forlan from Atletico Madrid earlier this week but there has been speculation in Italy about how Gasperini would fit Uruguay’s Forlan into a side with Giampaolo Pazzini and Diego Milito.

All three are natural number nines whereas Pandev and Eto’o often filled in on the flanks. But Forlan says he would have no problems playing out wide if that is what he is asked to do.

“I want to play where the coach tells me to. For Uruguay I don’t play up front as we have (Luis) Suarez and (Edinson) Cavani so I play more as an attacking playmaker,” Forlan told Inter’s official TV station.

And he revealed that he has a headstart when it comes to learning Italian.

“I speak a little Italian, I studied it at school when I was young but I’ve forgotten it a bit.

“I’ve joined a big club and knowing a few Italian words makes everything a bit easier because it allows you to fit straight into the atmosphere.”
