One of the world’s leading human rights lawyers, Piers Gardner, will be one of the speakers at the Malta Institute of Management’s annual tax conference to be held on March 6.
Dr Gardner has a detailed knowledge of all aspects of the European Convention on Human Rights, together with other European treaty-based law, and their operation in domestic, EU and international law. He has dealt in particular with cases concerning the application of the ECHR to commercial, investigatory and tax matters and the interaction of international and domestic proceedings. He recently argued the Yukos vs Russia case at the European Court of Human Rights, one of its most important judgments to date, resulting in a multi-million award.
The line-up includes Giovanni Bonello, a former judge of the ECHR who, for the first time, will talk about his tax judgments, Philip Baker QC, Pasquale Pistone and Robert Attard.
Dr Attard is partner and tax policy leader for EY, central and southeast Europe, a tenured senior lecturer at the University of Malta and a visiting professor at the University of Ferrara. He has published extensively on tax law.
