Many criticised the appointment of Roy Hodgson last year when he left Premier League club West Bromwich Albion to take over the England job.

Hodgson, who had his debut in May 26, 2012 in a 1-0 win over Norway, has defied the odds, however.

From 18 internationals, En-gland only lost once with him in charge of the team. The Whites remain undefeated at home in six matches.

Hodgson’s last match brought a lot of satisfaction to the England fans as Three Lions beat Scotland at Wembley Stadium.

This was the first duel between the two great rivals since they met in a play-off for the 2000 European Championship finals.

In the first match at Hampden Park, England toppled Scotland 2-0 (Scholes 2). England lost the return at Wembley 0-1, but still qualified 2-1 on aggregate.

While Paul Scholes was the hero of that two-legged affair, last month it was the turn of South-ampton striker Ricky Lambert to steal the limelight after scoring the winner on his debut for the national team.

Before joining Southampton, Lambert played for Blackpool, Macclesfield, Stockport, Rochdale and Bristol Rovers.

England now have two World Cup qualifiers coming up in the next few days.

Tomorrow they play at home to Moldova before Tuesday’s trip to Ukraine.
