Sixteenth century defensive casemates and a World War II magazine pit have been found in works to clear Peacock Gardens in Valletta for an €800,000 renovation.

Exploratory archaeological work directed by the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage is taking place at two of 10 casemates, which form part of a defence system overlooking Marsamxett Harbour. The World War II pit was uncovered and cleaned.

Architects and heritage experts are studying the possibility of integrating the discoveries into the overall plan for the area.

Mepa consultations are underway regarding the extent of damage caused by trees anchored to the top of a very lean casemate roof, the council added.

Peacock Gardens are being renovated in a project part-financed by the EU. Plans include rehabilitating heritage assets, creating public space and a recreational area for children, and installing an Interpretation Centre for Valletta World Heritage City.

Experts were on site last week to monitor any discoveries made within the fortifications.
