I refer to Lino Bugeja’s letter ‘Jews rescuing Christians’ of August 6.

This letter highlights the plight of Christians being persecuted in Iraq and Syria and the admirable efforts being undertaken by a Jewish gentleman and his organisation to help these Christians.

However, Bugeja mentions that this Jewish gentleman “revealed his disappointment at the apathy of the Christian Church, especially in the European countries with deep-rooted Christian traditions, towards her brethren...”.

Admittedly, though much more can be done to help these unfortunate people who are suffering greatly at the hands of IS and other warmongers, this statement is not factually correct.

Aid to the Church in Need, an International Pontifical Foundation of Charity, has been mandated by the Church to assist Christians wherever they are persecuted.

It takes this mandate very seriously and offers practical and spiritual help to all Christians of all denominationswherever this is needed and especially (but not exclusively) in the Middle East where the need for aid is immediate.

This organisation often proffers aid to all in need, believers and non-believers, in line with basic Christian principles.

Aid to the Church in Need has offices in 21 countries, including Malta (set up on May 13, 2014), and is active with 5,000 projects per year in over 140 countries. Anyone interested in the activities of Aid to the Church in Need is invited to visit the Malta office website on www.acnmalta.org.
