Long regarded a symbol of the economic transformation undertaken by the Nationalist administration that took office for the first time in 1987, the Gudja airport terminal turns 20 today.

The anniversary was marked on the eve with a visit by former Prime Minister Eddie Fenech Adami and several ministers or former ministers who were responsible for aviation and transport over the years. The occasion also coincided with Dr Fenech Adami’s 78th birthday as airport chief executive Markus Klaushofer presented the former PM and President Emeritus with a silver frame carrying a photo of the official inauguration 20 years ago.

Catching a glimpse of Nationalist MP Francis Zammit Dimech looking over his shoulder at the photo, Dr Fenech Adami joked: “Are you trying to see how much hair you lost, Francis?” Dr Zammit Dimech was communications minister at the time.

The quip brought a smile to those present, as Dr Fenech Adami spoke of the vision of creating a new terminal soon after 1987, which had reaped benefits for the economy.

“The high quality service we are witnessing today is not only an achievement for the airport but for all Malta,” he said.
