Alternattiva Demokratika yesterday emphasised the importance of creating green jobs, but underlined the need to overcome hurdles to make inroads in this sector.
Speaking at the book launch of ‘Green jobs from a small state perspective – case studies from Malta’ yesterday, AD chairman Michael Briguglio said civil society representatives are highly conscious of the potential of green jobs.
Trade unions and environmental NGOs, for example, acknowledge that a shift towards sustainable energy use has a potential of generating such jobs and thatbenefits outweigh negative repercussions, such as potential job losses in other sectors.
Yet, one should also be wary of an uneven market, ranging from skill mismatches to precarious employment situations, Dr Briguglio said.
Therefore, economic and social policies should give priority to this sector through job creation in sectors such as alternative energy, public transport, waste management, IT, tourism, agriculture and research.
