A grandmother’s quick thinking saved her two granddaughters from being seriously injured or killed after she pushed them away from the path of a car careening in their direction as they waited on a bus stop in Mellieħa.

Witnesses said the incident happened yesterday morning in the village’s main street after the driver failed to stop at the junction and collided with another car.

The grandmother and the young girls only escaped injury after their grandmother pushed them out of the way as the car came hurtling towards them. Fortunately there were no serious injuries.

An eyewitness, Magda Hamernikova, 30, was passing by as the incident occurred. She said: “I was pushing my one-year-old son, Jacob, up the hill when a young woman and a male passenger came down the side street but failed to stop.”

She added: “That was when I heard an almighty bang as the car coming down the high street careered into it. The driver lost control and came hurtling in to the bus stop, missing the little girls by inches.”

Police arrived at the scene a short while later and the cars were removed.
