Some of the 40 gas distributors are selling cylinders at a higher rate than that set by Liquigas but still within the price range established by the Malta Resources Authority.

In a statement, Liquigas complained that these distributors were selling gas at higher prices. But the Chamber for Small and Medium Enterprises – GRTU, defended the distributors it represents saying the increase was only of 50c on the 12kg cylinder and 10c on the 15kg cylinder.

A GRTU spokesman explained that the distributors had asked Liquigas to increase their commission and include it in the list of costs which it gives the Malta Resources Authority. However, the company refused.

“Some distributors decided to increase their commission but the selling price is still lower than the maximum selling price established by MRA,” the spokesman said.

Liquigas maintained that distributors were not authorised to modify its recommended selling prices without any instruction and/or approval. The company said it had not increased its selling price of gas since October 1.

“Such price increases are coming directly from some distributors who decided on their own to increase their prices for consumers,” it said.

The company said gas cylinders being sold at the recommended selling price could be purchased from December 13th Road in Marsa, near the Dun Ġorġ Preca Chapel on Monday and Friday between 4 and 6 p.m. and on Saturday between 8 and 11 a.m.

Alternatively, people may purchase gas from another distributor selling gas at the recommended selling price in St Margaret Street, Siġġiewi, on Thursday between 4 and 6 p.m. and on Saturday between 8 and 11 a.m.

In Gozo, Liquigas said, Carmel Formosa was selling gas at the recommended selling price from Triq Wied Merill, San Lawrenz, from Monday to Saturday between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Alternatively, from 1, Soil Street, Xewkija, between 9 a.m. and noon.

The recommended selling price for LPG is:
