The waste transfer station and material recovery facility in Gozo is expected to be ready by the end of the year, Environment Minister Leo Brincat said during a site visit yesterday.

The facility will sort out waste from Gozo and Comino into different streams before transfer to waste management facilities in Malta. Some €10 million spent on the project came from EU funds.

Once operational, the facility will replace the present one in use at Qortin and will be able to process larger quantities of recycled waste, reducing the pressure on the Sant’Antnin facility in Malta.

The fact that it is a closed facility located underground will help ensure no foul smells would be emitted by the plant, according to Gozo Minister Anton Refalo.
