Finance Minister Tonio Fenech has lauded what he called Gozo Channel Company’s success in reducing its costs per passenger and per vehicle carried.

Answering a parliamentary question by Leo Brincat (PL) on Tuesday, he said the company had succeeded in reducing its costs in the face of ever-rising fuel prices and wage and salary increases as per the COLA and collective agreements.

Giving figures for 2008, 2009, 2010 and January-March 2011, Mr Fenech said costs per vehicle had respectively been €2.9955, 2.6624, €2.6902 and €2.0595.

Costs per passenger had respectively been the same as per vehicle.

Mr Brincat had pointed out that the minister had recently measured the company’s success on the greater numbers of passengers carried over the previous year, and asked if Mr Fenech agreed that the true measure of success of a monopolistic company could only be gleaned from Gozo Channel’s costs per passenger and per vehicle carried.
