The UN’s resolution to eliminate Syria’s chemical weapons and endorse a plan for Syrian-led negotiations toward peace has been welcomed by the Government.

The UN Security Council Resolution 2118 (2013) was adopted last Friday following a chemical attack in Syria in August, which killed hundreds of civilians.

“The unanimous adoption of the resolution constitutes a significant step towards a unified international response to the crisis in Syria following months of deadlock,” said a Government spokesman.

It expressed its hope this response to the Syrian crisis will lay the foundation for an immediate end to violence and set a standard for the international community when responding to threats posed by weapons of mass destruction and chemical weapons.

Malta expressed its solidarity and support to the neighbouring countries hosting thousands of Syrian nationals on their borders and bearing the burden that such an exodus is inflicting.
