Former Brazil striker Ronaldo congratulated Miroslav Klose after the German equalled his record of 15 World Cup goals on Saturday night.

Klose, 36, came on in the second half against Ghana and scored the equaliser in a thrilling 2-2 draw in Group G.

“Welcome to the club,” Ronaldo tweeted.

“I can only imagine your happiness!!! What a great World Cup!!!”

Ronaldo scored his goals in the 1998, 2002 and 2006 tournaments.

Maradona shows FA chief the finger

Diego Maradona showed Argentine FA president Julio Grondona the finger on live television after the administrator had suggested Argentina scored against Iran because “jinxed” Maradona had left the stadium by then.

The 1986 World Cup winner got out of his seat and left shortly before the end of both halves, missing Lionel Messi’s brilliant stoppage-time winner which gave Argentina a 1-0 win over Iran and a place in the 16.

“Jinx this,” Maradona said, looking at the camera of Venezuela’s Telesur broadcaster for whom he works as a commentator and holding up his middle finger in response to Grondona’s comments to reporters.

“Poor, stupid man. This is Messi’s merit, Not because I left,” Maradona added.

US star Hope Solo arrested after assault

Hope Solo, goalkeeper of the US women’s football team, was arrested on Saturday for striking her sister and a teenage nephew during a dispute at her home in a Seattle suburb, police said.

Police who responded to a 911 call at Solo’s house in Kirkland a little after midnight could hear noise from the “disturbance” from the street, according to a police statement.

Solo, 32, appeared intoxicated and upset, police said, and her 17-year-old nephew and adult sister were visibly injured.

The soccer star was hosting a party at her house when the dispute took place, the Seattle Times reported.

Nigerian press in Boko Haram protest

The Nigerian press covering the World Cup in Brazil seized on the high-profile tournament on Saturday to show their opposition to the Boko Haram Islamist militants by wearing protest T-shirts.

The T-shirts sported the slogan “The World Unites Against Boko Haram” and the flags of Nigeria and Bosnia and Herzegovina, who squared off in their Group F match in Cuiaba’s Pantanal arena.

Eneka Odikpo, commentator for Radio Nigeria, said he had distributed 250 T-shirts among his fellow Nigerian journalists and some Nigerian fans and officials were also wearing them.

Redknapp reveals England pull-outs

Harry Redknapp has questioned the commitment of young English players to the national team cause, claiming there were certain individuals during his time at Tottenham who tried to find ways of skipping international duty.

The QPR boss described the Italy and Uruguay teams who had knocked England out of the World Cup as “average”“ and claimed England had more talent at their disposal than any other team in Group D.

“I still think we go to tournaments, whether it be under-17s, under-19s, under-21s, there are too many pull-outs, it seems to be everyone has got an excuse, and I can tell you when I was at Tottenham, when full internationals came around, there were two or three players who did not want to play for England,” Redknapp was quoted as saying.

Hodgson still has ‘enthusiasm’ for job

Roy Hodgson insists his desire to manage England has not diminished one bit despite their embarrassingly early World Cup exit.

England have failed to make it through to the knock-out stages of the World Cup for the first time since 1958.

The Football Association has decided to stick by the 66-year-old though, and the man himself is determined to right the wrongs of this campaign at Euro 2016.

“My enthusiasm for football is not likely to wane and my enthusiasm for working with these players is not likely to wane either,” the England manager said.

United linked with Milan’s De Jong

Manchester United are considering an approach for Milan and Holland midfielder Nigel De Jong, The Sunday People reported yesterday.

Holland manager Louis van Gaal, who will take charge of United after the World Cup, has identified the Dutch enforcer as his next transfer target, according to the report.

A bid for the 29-year-old, who had a spell with Manchester City in the Premier League, could be accepted as Milan are eager to raise funds after failing to qualify for Europe.

Manchester United are reportedly prepared to pay £6 million for De Jong, who only has 12 months left on his Milan contract.
