The government is currently in final talks with the administrative authority of the European Social Fund on the setting up of the structure for a number of social development centres. These are expected to be completed by the end of March.

Replying to PQs by Nationalist MP Clyde Puli, Social Solidarity Minister Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca said there would eventually be six regional development centres to cover the whole country.

The social development centres and family resources centres would be part of the LEAP project. They would be established according to a list of priorities: the northern and southern harbour areas, the north, Gozo, the west and finally the southeast.

Ms Coleiro Preca said the second phase of the project would see the setting up of family resources centres according to action plans laid down by the social development centres.

The final plan was expected to be completed by the end of the year. The project would utilise resources already existent.
