A woman who hurt her daughter in a fight over the younger woman’s boyfriend has been conditionally discharged after the daughter conceded her mother was right to be angry.

Giuseppa Camilleri, 58, from Rabat, injured Connie Camilleri on December 1, 2011, over the fact that she was seeing Gianluca Torres.

Three weeks ago Mr Torres, a 40-year-old Sicilian, was jailed for three-and-a-half years after admitting 10 counts of theft over two months.

He had taken bags and other items from people across the island between September and November. Mr Torres also hit the headlines last year after stealing the donation box of Paceville’s Millennium Chapel, saying he needed the money to buy a cot. He had been sentenced to 18 months behind bars.

During proceedings against her mother, Ms Camilleri told Magistrate Neville Camilleri that her anger was justified because Mr Torres was not a savoury character, and that she had forgiven the act of violence. The magistrate conditionally discharged the accused for one year. Lawyers Veronique Dalli and Dean Hili appeared for the defendant.
