Pets are putting a pause on people’s holidays, with 25 per cent of owners taking fewer breaks since getting their animal, according to a survey.

Only 23 per cent of owners take their pet away with them, the poll by insurer Petplan showed. As many as 30 per cent of owners said they could not bear to be away from their pet for an extended period.

A total of 20 per cent of male owners and 12 per cent of women have cancelled a holiday because their pet was ill, they were worried about leaving it, or they could not find a suitable sitter.

Of those who do take their pet on holiday, 20 per cent have experienced problems while they were away, such as their pet falling ill, being injured or damaging the property they were staying at.
