An underground car park and public garden near Sliema Ferries should be open by summer 2014.

Plans include monuments to Sliema Wanderers legend Tony Nicholl and sculptor Ċensu Apap

The €7 million project on The Strand will provide more than 200 parking spaces covered by a garden.

Plans for the 6,000-square-metre garden include trees, fountains, the current war memorial, a monument dedicated to Sliema Wanderers legend Tony Nicholl and another to sculptor Ċensu Apap.

There will also be a tourist information office, boat ticket kiosks and public toilets. The Resources Ministry said the project, approved by the planning authority yesterday, complemented the investment already made by the Government to upgrade this commercial and residential area of Sliema.

Works are expected to start in the first half of the new year after a tender process and should be completed in about a year, the ministry said. It added that it would liaise with the Sliema council and the business community to limit inconvenience to residents and businesses.

A model and artist’s impression of the project can be viewed at the Plaza Shopping Centre in Sliema between Saturday and January 13.
